Tips for a Cleaner, More Organized Home
Tips for a cleaner, more organized home. Being an interior design firm, we're constantly looking to share tips and trends with our clients. We also like to offer advice for how to keep a newly designed or refreshed home looking its best! Here's a handy list that we hope will help you keep a cleaner, more organized home. Lately we’ve been thinking a lot about how to simplify life and STAY organized through out the week. Keeping your home clean and clutter free will ease your mind, making you feel more relaxed and also you’ll be ready incase an unexpected guest pops by! We’ve scoured websites and articles for the best organization tips and come up with some of our own too! Here’s our list of 10 ways to keep your home cleaner and more organized. Incorporate “tidying” into your day. Whether you do it in the morning or right when you get home from work, you’ll be amazed at just how tidy you can keep things. Set your alarm for 10 minutes or listen to 3 songs on Alexa and before you know it, your tidy routine will be come a habit!
Do the dishes while cooking; have something simmering on the stove? Wash up the dishes in the sink, or better yet, have your partner do it! Then, by the time dinner is ready you’ll be 75% done with the dishes and all that is left are a few plates and glasses that can easily be popped in the dishwasher!
We make a habit to change out the kitchen towel at least every 1-2 days. Before you throw it in the laundry hamper, use it to wipe down all kitchen surfaces (with the addition of some nice, good smelling anti-bacterial spray of course!). That way you’ll know your kitchen is clean and sanitized and ready for a brand new kitchen towel!
After folding the laundry, put it away right then, if you’re like me I fold right in my closet so putting the clothes away is easy. If the kiddos are around ask them to put their clothes away too, that will really, really help with the tidiness of their rooms as well!
Organize mail as you get it. After you get the mail, bring it straight over to your recycle bin, sort it there and discard any “junk” mail, then organize into priority level, obviously bills and urgent needs on the top, letters and magazines or catalogs on the bottom. That way if you only have a little bit of time, you know which mail is top priority and can take care of it ASAP.
Keep cleaning products in a central location, whether it’s your laundry room or under the kitchen sink. Everyone will know where the cleaning products are and can access them quickly. Keep rags, paper towels and sponges nearby as well, maybe a broom and dustpan too!
Elect one day a week as “fridge” clean out day. Sundays work really well for this; take inventory of all the items in the fridge that may be expired or old. Perhaps pull out that little bowl of 4 raviolis someone couldn’t finish and have it for lunch. You’ll start the week fresh and ready for a newly stocked fridge!
The best way to store plastic bags is to fold them into little footballs (same way as you would traditionally fold a flag). Store them in a nice little box or tin and that way you can grab them quickly when you need one and all the bags don’t come oozing out of the container (because who needs one more thing to put away!).
You probably already know this one, but things like ice cube trays or our personal favorite - Mochi containers, are great for office/home organization. Things like paper clips, post it notes (the small ones), jewelry and anything else tiny will fit great in them, making you more effective and efficient too.
Put shoes into a closet or bin, don’t just leave them out in the foyer. You know the drill, everyone comes home, takes their shoes off and leaves them in front of the door. If you’re like us, we like to change up the shoes and wear a different pair each day, that’s at least 5 pair of shoes in the foyer by the end of the week instead of just one! Try it, it simple! We hope these tips are helpful for you and help keep your home as tidy and put together as possible. Even if you adopt only a few of them, you’re on your way to a more organized you!
